Clothing for Atopic Dermatitis: What Matters in Skin-Friendly Garments

Clothing for atopic dermatitis refers to specially developed, skin-friendly garments by BINAMED® designed for people with sensitive or inflamed skin. They are made from soft, breathable materials, reduce friction, and help support a balanced skin climate. As a result, itching, skin irritation, and inflammation may be noticeably reduced.

We have been developing our BINAMED® atopic dermatitis clothing for many years in close collaboration with dermatology clinics and specialists. For over 19 years, medical expertise, clinical observations, and textile research have contributed to the continuous refinement of our products. This sets BINAMED® apart from conventional solutions, focusing on functional, medically relevant textile solutions for people with atopic dermatitis.

Atopic dermatitis is one of the chronic inflammatory skin conditions in which external factors such as clothing play an important role. Severe itching, dry skin, and inflammation shape the daily lives of many affected individuals. In atopic dermatitis, the skin is highly sensitive to friction, heat, and touch. Even conventional clothing can aggravate symptoms, leading to increased scratching.

In addition to medical treatment provided by a physician, the choice of suitable clothing can also have a significant impact on the skin’s condition and symptoms. This is where BINAMED® clothing for atopic dermatitis comes in. Made from soft micro-modal fibres with integrated silver yarn, it helps protect sensitive skin and can reduce the growth of microorganisms. As a result, BINAMED® clothing for atopic dermatitis supports a balanced skin climate and reduces mechanical stress on the skin.

Atopic Dermatitis and Its Effects on the Skin

People with atopic dermatitis have a weakened skin barrier. The skin is less able to retain moisture and dries out quickly. As a result, irritants, allergens, and germs can penetrate the skin more easily, which often leads to more frequent and more intense inflammatory skin reactions.

One of the most distressing symptoms of atopic dermatitis is severe itching. However, scratching further damages the skin’s surface and can worsen existing inflammation. Open skin areas also increase the risk of bacterial infections. This creates a vicious cycle of itching, scratching, and skin damage.

External factors can further aggravate the condition. Friction from rough fabrics irritates the skin mechanically, while heat and sweating can increase itching and inflammation. For this reason, choosing suitable clothing for atopic dermatitis is particularly important.

Why Special Clothing for Atopic Dermatitis Is Beneficial

BINAMED® clothing for atopic dermatitis can significantly ease everyday life for people affected by the condition. It provides a level of comfort and freedom of movement that conventional textiles often cannot offer. Soft micro-modal fibres and careful craftsmanship ensure that BINAMED® clothing for atopic dermatitis feels comfortable on the skin.

Compared to conventional clothing, BINAMED® textiles are seamlessly knitted and feature only a small number of seams that are placed on the outside and are extremely flat and soft. This special seam design helps reduce mechanical irritation, pressure points, and micro-injuries to an already compromised skin barrier. It also makes it easier to put on and take off the clothing without unnecessarily stressing the skin.

BINAMED® clothing for atopic dermatitis also supports a balanced skin climate. Thanks to the micro-modal fibres used, it helps transport moisture away from the body and prevents heat build-up, so you can feel comfortable during a wide range of activities.

Choosing suitable clothing for atopic dermatitis not only provides certified skin comfort but also allows greater freedom of movement in everyday life. BINAMED® clothing is certified as a Class I medical device (CE marking) and has been tested by HOHENSTEIN Laboratories for certified wearing comfort, including breathability, thermal insulation, and skin feel. All BINAMED products also carry the OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 label, confirming that all components have been tested for over 1,000 known and regulated harmful substances. This ensures that the garments meet strict requirements for safety, functionality, and skin compatibility.

Material Science in Atopic Dermatitis: Which Textiles Are Suitable?

Choosing the right material plays a crucial role in managing atopic dermatitis. Sensitive skin reacts particularly strongly to rough, scratchy, or synthetic fabrics. Soft, breathable textiles help reduce friction and protect the skin from additional stress. The material also influences the skin climate; what matters most is how a fabric behaves on the skin and how it manages moisture and heat.

Here you will find an overview of the most important fibres:

Cotton – Not a Suitable Alternative for People with Atopic Dermatitis

Cotton is often considered “skin-friendly” in everyday use, but from a medical perspective it is not suitable for people with atopic dermatitis. This recommendation is based on outdated assumptions. Cotton does not meet the requirements of inflamed skin. Although it absorbs moisture well, it releases it only slowly. This means that sweat and heat remain on the skin for longer periods. In areas of inflamed or open skin, this humid environment can place additional stress on the skin and may increase itching. Prolonged moisture can also promote the growth of microorganisms.

Another disadvantage is the fibre structure. Compared to modern specialty fibres such as micro-modal, cotton is significantly coarser. As a result, it can cause increased friction during movement and mechanically irritate sensitive skin.

From a dermatological perspective, cotton is therefore not an equivalent substitute for modern specialty fibres with active moisture and climate management properties. For people with atopic dermatitis, only specially developed textiles are suitable.

Synthetic Fibres – Limitations of Modern Materials

Synthetic fabrics are made from chemically produced fibres that are often not skin-friendly. They tend to create more friction on the skin and increase the risk of irritation and itching. In particular, coarse and rigid synthetic fibres such as polyester or acrylic can increase the likelihood of skin problems.

Many synthetic fibres are less breathable than natural fibres. They also absorb moisture less effectively, meaning that sweat remains on the skin for longer. This can increase feelings of tightness, irritation, and therefore itching. For everyday use, and especially for babies and children, micro-modal and silver-based textiles are a significantly better choice.

Silver Textiles with Micro-Modal as Targeted Support for Atopic Dermatitis

At BINAMED®, we develop clothing specifically designed to meet the needs of sensitive and compromised skin. The basis of our products is a patented knitting technology . In this process, soft micro-modal fibres are permanently combined with a polyamide yarn coated with pure silver. The silver yarn is an integral part of the textile structure — it is not simply a coating or loosely knitted-in element.

Thanks to this manufacturing method, the silver remains in the fabric for at least up to 150 wash cycles, does not wear off, and retains its function even after frequent washing at 60°C. This temperature is important to remove skin particles, traces of blood or exudate, and ointment residues, thereby preventing additional skin stress.

We do not use nanotechnology; the silver does not come into contact with the skin as a loose or superficial coating.

Benefits of BINAMED® Silver Textiles

BINAMED® silver textiles are an innovative solution for people with atopic dermatitis, as they combine comfort, protection, and a balanced skin climate. Micro-modal is characterised by its particularly smooth fibre structure and active moisture management. Its smooth surface reduces mechanical friction on the damaged skin barrier, while also effectively transporting moisture away from the body. This helps prevent heat build-up and overheating.

In particular, the functional properties of our atopic dermatitis clothing make it a well-established support in everyday life.

Antimicrobial effect: Silver has the natural ability to inhibit bacterial growth on the skin . In atopic dermatitis, the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus is frequently present on the skin. It can promote inflammation and negatively influence the course of the condition. The permanently integrated silver yarn helps reduce the microbial load within the textile.

Protection against infections: Silver textiles can help reduce the risk of infections, which occur more frequently in atopic dermatitis. In addition, silver has a temperature-regulating effect and a calming influence on the skin. This may help reduce itching and improve overall comfort in everyday life.

No side effects: We use pure silver that is free from chemical additives. The silver is firmly integrated into the textile and does not penetrate the skin or have any toxic effect. As a result, silver textiles are also suitable for babies, toddlers, and very sensitive skin.

Temperature regulation and moisture management: Silver fibres efficiently conduct heat and moisture. In summer, this helps keep the skin pleasantly cool, while in winter the fabric provides sufficient warmth. At the same time, the fibres transport moisture away from the skin, helping it remain dry and comfortable. A dry and stable skin climate can help reduce irritation and itching.

How to Care for Your Atopic Dermatitis Clothing

To ensure that clothing for atopic dermatitis retains its skin-friendly properties, proper care is essential. Even high-quality materials can lose their comfort and performance if they are not cared for correctly. Proper care helps protect the fibres and maintain a comfortable feel against the skin.

Proper hygienic cleaning of clothing is particularly important for people with atopic dermatitis. The skin is often exposed to emollient creams, ointments, and residues of blood or exudate from scratched areas of skin. In addition, atopic dermatitis is frequently associated with increased colonisation of the skin by the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus.

To help prevent skin irritation, it is important to thoroughly remove these residues and microorganisms from the textiles. For this reason, we select materials and manufacturing processes that allow our silver textiles to be washed safely at 60°C. From a medical and hygiene perspective, this is not simply a comfort feature but an important requirement. Washing at 60°C helps effectively remove microorganisms such as Staphylococcus aureus, as well as ointment residues and skin secretions from the fabric.

Use a mild detergent designed for delicate fabrics and avoid fabric softeners completely, as they may place unnecessary stress on sensitive skin. Whenever possible, allow the garments to air dry. High heat, bleach, and harsh cleaning agents can affect the silver fibres and the textile structure. Gentle care is therefore particularly important to help maintain the functional properties of the silver textiles over time.

Tips for Everyday Life with Atopic Dermatitis Clothing

For people living with atopic dermatitis, clothing plays an important role in everyday comfort and well-being. Choosing the right BINAMED® clothing can help reduce irritation and itching while placing less stress on the skin. However, the material is only one factor to consider:

Avoid dressing too warmly: Clothing that is too tight or too thick can increase body temperature and cause excessive sweating. This may worsen itching and lead to additional skin irritation. Loose-fitting, breathable garments help keep the skin comfortable and allow it to breathe more easily.

Choose suitable clothing for summer: Lightweight, breathable fabrics help prevent heat build-up. Light-coloured garments reflect sunlight and support a comfortable skin climate. This helps keep the skin dry and may reduce irritation.

Choosing the right sleepwear: For nighttime, soft, skin-friendly BINAMED® products without irritating seams or labels are ideal. They provide gentle contact with the skin and improve overall sleep comfort. This can help reduce nighttime itching.

Atopic Dermatitis Clothing for Babies, Children, and Adults

Different age groups have different requirements when it comes to clothing for atopic dermatitis. Babies and toddlers in particular need soft, gentle fabrics that soothe the skin and help prevent irritation. For children, it is important that clothing allows sufficient freedom of movement while still feeling soft and comfortable on sensitive skin.

Experts recommend special night-time baby onesies, optionally with integrated mittens. They sit gently on the skin and help prevent infants from scratching themselves during sleep. The onesies are made from breathable micro-modal fibres with integrated silver yarn, helping to regulate temperature and moisture. Minimal or flat seams reduce pressure points and friction, helping protect the skin throughout the night.

Adults benefit from materials that are breathable and combine comfort with protection against friction. For targeted protection of particularly sensitive areas, neck protectors, arm sleeves, knee sleeves, and finger gloves are particularly suitable. They help protect against friction and scratching in everyday situations and can be easily combined with soft shirts and leggings.
